New Aerial Photographs from Newport, RI
Sep 05, 2017
I got the crazy idea recently to charter a doorless helicopter and shoot aerial photos over Newport, Rhode Island. The initial idea came to me when the 2017 J Class Yacht World Championship was going on. I wanted to shoot these beautiful boats under sail, so I thought I'd timed my flight just right. Unfortunately, the races ended up being delayed that day due to lack of wind, so I ended up shooting a bunch of different things. I did manage to catch three of the yachts, Velsheda, Ranger, and Topaz, heading out from the dock to race, but they didn't have their sails up at that point so I was pretty limited in what I could do with them. Nevertheless, the whole experience was way less terrifying than I'd thought it'd be, and the hour flew by (literally, haha). While I've had a Phantom 3 Pro drone since last year, it does not compare in any way to shooting from a helicopter, and there's a good chance I might be addicted to helishooting now :)
Here's a sneak peek of what I got. I shot everything with my 50 megapixel Canon 5DSR, so the files are enormous and can therefore be printed on a large scale!
